The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is in the process to make the crash tests mandatory for passenger cars in India. The government is planning to mandate the offset front crash test and side impact crash test norms for all the cars, informed a govt representative. To meet the regulations, carmakers will need to have several standard safety features including airbags. The government representative also said that the facilities are also being built for the requisite test under National Automotive Testing and Research & Development Infrastructure Project (NATRIP) initiative. As soon as these facilities will get ready, the regulations will be implemented.
The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) is one of the members of the standing committee on the Central Motor Vehicle Rules that looks after the implementation issues.
