Mercedes-Benz India has been on a launching spree of late, with the latest one being the new-gen C-Class. The next product that the company is planning to bring in will be the much-awaited CLA-Class. Expected to be priced below Rs. 30 lakh, this entry-level luxury sedan will be launched in January 2015. The car will take on the Audi A3 sedan, which currently is the most affordable luxury car in India. The CLA-Class will be based on the company's MFA (Modular Front-Wheel Drive Architecture) platform, on which the A-Class, B-Class, GLA-Class, CLA 45 AMG and GLA 45 AMG are also based.
Powering the CLA-Class might be the same engines that are doing duty on the GLA-Class compact SUV i.e. a 2.2-litre 4-cylinder, turbocharged diesel and a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol. Both the engines will be paired to a 7G-DCT automatic transmission.
The CLA-Class is based on the same platform as the A-Class, B-Class and the soon to be launched GLA-Class. Unlike the A and B-Class which came only with a petrol engine to begin with, the CLA-Class will be available with both petrol and diesel engines at launch. Bookings for the same are expected to begin very shortly at all Mercedes-Benz dealers around the country.
India though predominantly is a diesel driven market, and the CLA will come with a new 2.1-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine. Badged the CLA200 CDi, the engine produces 136PS of peak power between 3,600–4,400rpm and 300Nm of peak torque between 1,600–3,000rpm. With a top speed of 220kmph and a claimed 0-100 time of 9.3-seconds, the diesel is only marginally faster than the petrol. Both the petrol and diesel engines will be mated to Mercedes-Benz’s tried and tested 7G-DCT automatic transmission with a dual clutch setup.
