The Audi Q7 will be the first model from the Volkswagen Group to offer a plug-in hybrid diesel powertrain. The new-generation of the Q7 will make its debut next year and the company will bring it out in both the petrol and diesel variants. There is also the plug-in diesel variant which will go on sale in Europe and then the US. The Q7 will be the second car to get the plug-in hybrid diesel engine; the first one of course was from the Swedish car manufacturer Volvo.
The Volvo V60 with the plug-in hybrid diesel system sold more than 10000 units last year and one can understand why Audi took an interest in this segment. Both its rivals - Mercedes-Benz and BMW currently offer a plug-in hybrid petrol variant but Audi will be the first among the lot to come out with the diesel.
This does give Audi a technology edge and hence will have the distinction of being the first to adapt to this technology. We expect the drivetrain to be the combination of the 3.0-liter V-6 diesel and an electric motor. Since it is a plug-in, the Q7 will be a low emission car and expect the diesel to be big on mileage too.
