BMW has announced that it's recalling the high-performance i8 hybrid sports car over a manufacturing defect that could result in a leaky fuel tank.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced the recall of BMW i8 models produced between May 16, 2014, and September 16, 2014. It is said that a bolt used to ground a cable between the fuel tank and chassis may have been improperly welded, which could cause a fuel leak.
If the defect leads to a leak, it could increase the likelihood of a fire. Till date, there have been no crashes or injuries reported and BMW will inspect all vehicles covered by the recall and replace the fuel tank where necessary.
The recall will apply to only 223 units of the i8 as that is the number they've sold.
