The 2015 Sonata (codename: LF Sonata) is slightly bigger than the outgoing model (codename: YF Sonata), riding on a wheelbase which is 10 mm longer, and it is 35 mm longer overall. Hyundai has reworked the Sonata’s styling, incorporating the ‘Fluidic 2.0’ design language, which is squarer, more sober and altogether less flamboyant than the current generation design.
An interesting design highlight, albeit quite subtle, is that Hyundai has tried to give the new LF Sonata a coupe-like rear roofline. This has been done in the interest of scooping out more rear passenger headroom. Both headroom and rear legroom in the new Sonata have increased by an inch compared to the outgoing model.
The 2.4-litre, four-cylinder petrol motor has been carried over, but has been reworked in the interests of lower emissions. The claimed peak horsepower figures are actually 5 PS down on the previous model (torque is 5.5 Nm less as well), but I don’t expect that slight difference to impact performance in any way. Both power and torque are delivered earlier in the rev rage, which in fact should aid drivability. Claimed fuel economy is the same (12 km/l) for both the 2014 and 2015 Sonatas.
