BMW will expand the number of places electric car users can charge up with a new dual-function lamp post.
The company has already erected two prototype Light and Charge street lights outside its headquarters and is getting ready to launch a pilot scheme across Munich next year,Reuters reports.
The solution combats the lack charge points by combining BMW's car-charging sockets with existing street lights. Users do not have to own a BMW electric vehicle to use the charging stations either, but there will be a charge via a smartphone app.
"Seamless charging infrastructure is essential if we want to see more electric vehicles on the road in our cities in the future," explained BMW's member of board management Peter Schwarzenbauer.
BMW's current electric car offering includes the BMW i3 city car and the BMW i8 hybrid.
