Autonomous driving and driver assistance technologies are set to move forward at a quick pace over the next few years. Manufacturers rely on many different suppliers for these technologies to move forward; one such supplier involved in many innovations is Delphi.
Delphi Automotive PLC just announced it will partner with Ottomatika, Inc., a company started by Carnegie Mellon University, which provides advanced automated driving software, to jointly develop technology that will help accelerate automated driving.
Delphi, the company that first introduced automotive radar systems, said it will integrate its active safety technologies with Ottomatika’s automated driving software.
The combination of the two is expected by Delphi to create a technology platform that will enable a vehicle to make human-like decisions when driving in the city or on the highway. The platform is expected to be flexible and could be expanded and upgraded as the software is updated. It will also support vehicle-to-environment (V2X) communications.“Dealing with highly complex real-world decisions is a limitation for much of the current technology in the market,” said Jeff Owens, Delphi’s chief technology officer. “This partnership with Ottomatika will represent a significant step forward in making automated driving a reality. Your car just got a lot smarter.”
Using their individual strengths, Delphi and Ottomatika stated they have jointly developed a vehicle platform that can instantaneously make complex decisions, like stopping and proceeding at a four-way stop, timing a highway merge or calculating the safest maneuver around a bicyclist on a city street.
